Breaking patterns: when it happens again anyway

You know your pattern. You know where it comes from. And still, in the moments that matter, you fall back on familiar responses. That is not a lack of willpower. Under pressure, your brain often takes the route it knows best. With BrainRouting, you train your brain to respond differently, so that other responses become more natural and accessible in everyday life.

Does this sound familiar?

You have already thought about it a lot. Maybe you have had coaching, read books or done trainings. You get it. And still:

  • You react the same way in the same situations.
  • You only notice afterwards, when it has already happened.
  • You resolve to do it differently, and next time it happens again.
  • Talking about it helps you understand your behaviour, but doesn't necessarily change how you respond.

Why a pattern keeps coming back

A pattern is a route in your brain that you have used so often it happens by itself. That is efficient: your brain doesn't have to choose everything anew.

Under pressure that gets stronger. Then your brain chooses fast and familiar: the reaction it knows. Holding on to control, getting defensive, adapting, pushing on. That happens faster than you can think.

“Breaking patterns” sounds as if you have to get rid of something. But your old routes don’t simply disappear. Through training and repetition, your brain can develop other ways of responding, making alternative routes more accessible when they matter.

Why insight alone is not enough

Insight helps you understand what happens. But the moment itself moves faster than your insight. Your brain has already reacted before you can work out what you want to do differently.

That is why talking about your patterns can help you understand them afterwards, but often changes little in the moment itself. “Breaking deeply ingrained patterns,” a participant wrote as a goal, after a lot of coaching. What was missing was not understanding. It was a way to train the brain to respond differently.

How BrainRouting makes another route available

Rather than talking afterwards about what happened, you work with what happens in your brain in the moment.

1

Your brain takes the familiar route

Under pressure, your brain often falls back on familiar responses, even when you know you want to react differently.

2

The measurement shows what happens

The sensors continuously measure your brain activity, including changes you may not yet be consciously aware of.

3

Your brain gets direct feedback

The screen opens or closes based on measured brain activity. Your brain learns from this immediate feedback.

4

Other routes become more accessible

Through repeated practice and feedback, your brain strengthens alternative routes, making them easier to access in daily life.

Why this works: neuroplasticity

Your brain keeps changing your whole life. Connections you use often grow stronger; connections you rarely use grow weaker. That is why a pattern that has been with you for decades can still lose its grip.

Read more about neuroplasticity and why your brain can learn other routes later in life too.

Frequently asked questions about breaking patterns

By letting your brain practise another route when the old pattern comes up. Insight alone is usually not enough, because familiar responses often happen before you consciously realise it. In BrainRouting, your brain activity is measured and translated into direct feedback, allowing your brain to practise responding differently.
